An Efficient space for a dynamic family

The Challenge:

This young, growing, very active family had a few challenges with their current residence. They had purchased it two years earlier due to it’s location and amazing two storey garage however the house needed attention. The house lacked for efficiencies in many key areas: the kitchen, entrance and quiet spaces. Originally the kitchen was broken into 2 main parts twelve feet apart. There was limited storage capacity and no rear entrance from the outside. The separate garage was accessed through the front door. This was the landing zone for all items coming in and out of the house. Anything from backpacks, to sports equipment to groceries could be found in this entrance. A home office was desired for quiet evening work and a dedicated creative space was desired to allow the current projects not to have to be put away during their creation and storage for the endless support supplies needed. The layout currently housed the children on the main floor and the master bedroom upstairs which made it difficult for entertaining. A modern look to eliminate the “country charm” would be the final request on this full scale renovation project wish list.

The Design Solution:

The Solution:

The first undertaking was to revise the current uses of the spaces and have them flow with the family. The master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in closet along with it’s own laundry facilities was relocated to the main floor. A rear entrance and outside ramp was envisioned to transport people and goods from the garage to the house. Once inside the space from this new outside entrance a mudroom with ample storage was created. The upper floor now took on the role of children’s bedrooms, Jack and Jill bathroom and the creative workspace with plenty of storage. The views from this upper level are truly inspiring and the perfect setting for painting, sewing and crafts. A private, quiet office space was achieved off the front entrance and separated from the main workings of the home. The balance of the main floor was now available for the cooking, dining and living areas. The kitchen stretches itself from the mudroom area with an extension into the dining with support countertop and upper cabinets. Tucked behind the double ovens you can find an efficient pantry space for everything and chef could require and more! Applying the modern color palette with durable, low maintenance products was the perfect finishing touch for this busy family. We were able to reintroduce family heirlooms into the new spaces to be used and enjoyed with the simple application of new upholstery. A family wall was created with generational photos and fond memories. We have left space on the wall for the many new memories that will be made within this renovated home.

A Place to Call Home

Creating and Designing an Open Concept Bungalow for Entertaining

The Challenge:

This busy, travelling couple were looking for a place to call their own. They wanted a home to entertain their friends and family with minimal maintenance and up keep. They wanted a complete interior package and intended to add only their personal belongings to this new space. All furniture and furnishings to complete the look were to be purchased. As a seasoned artist the wife dreamed of an art studio, a place to call her own. Space to store the endless amount of creative supplies, canvases and works-of-art in progress or completed. She wanted to be able to enter her creative environment, be inspired then leave without care or consideration for its visual appeal.

The Design Solution:

An open concept walk-out bungalow with two bedrooms was a suitable choice layout. This left large open spaces for entertaining. A flow through kitchen with large pantry was anchored with a twelve foot granite topped island perfect to gather as the chef completes the meal. A spacious great room with a variety of comfortable seating to accommodate 10 individuals. All finishes reflect a quick clean solution with minimal long term maintenance. Prefinished hardwood is throughout the main floor. Porcelain tile accents the bathrooms, main floor laundry and front foyer. A dedicated art studio in the basement is washed with beautiful natural light, ample storage and cork under foot for maximum comfort. Inspiration is abundant in this artist’s dream studio.

Retirement Dream Home Comes True with Residential Custom Home Design

The Challenge:

The discovery of an ocean side lot in a secluded bay on Vancouver Island brought this couple back to create their dream retirement property. As satisfied previous clients of Decca Design, they knew the Decca Design team could accomplish the perfect custom plan and interior design that would include contemporary design – a departure from the classical styling of their previous homes. This retirement home required a guest suite to house the visiting family and friends. Individual rooms would become the backdrop to showcase years of international travel and the treasures that were accumulated along each journey. The finished project had to remain cohesive while reflecting the eclectic nature of years of travel.

The Design Solution:

A large 6500 square foot seaside home with guest quarters above the garage, and ocean views from every room was realized. This contemporary design feels a part of it’s ocean environment with low maintenance stone block exterior construction and vast glazing windows and doors to integrate the outdoors with the interior design. Careful consideration was used to plan a large two way staircase with open treads and glass panel railings, while maintaining the panoramic ocean view only 120 feet away. Innovative design features enhance the casual retreat with outstanding water views. The resort like feel is complimented with low-maintenance materials – barefoot friendly cork flooring is found throughout the main floor. An open kitchen plan and integrated dining space makes for great entertaining and gatherings. Nestled I the corner of the great room is a baby grand piano. The voluminous room fills with beautiful music and makes any guest want to stay awhile. A primarily neutral palette lines the walls and mahogany accents are found in the trim, doors and built-ins off the library area.
The distance between the Decca Design office and the project site was not an obstacle for the builder. A comprehensive Decca Design trademark schedule binder was assembled to convey all the decisions made by the owners. The client, builder, trades and Decca Design all had access to the same package of information which minimized questions and provided overall vision for the challenges met along the journey. Retirement dreams indeed became reality with this project.

Combining a Custom Home Design with a Home Office Space

The Challenge:

After years of business success a life long dream to build a custom home was realized. With a clean slate to design and conceptualize the residence the task appeared over whelming. Locating a corner lot in a prestigious south west community was the first obstacle. Our in-take questionnaire helped to diagnose the wants and needs for this couple. Portions of the house would be dedicated to their in-home business for office and education therefore a fully wired, integrated home was also a requirement. Large gatherings would dictate open areas, flexible seating arrangements and entertaining rooms. This showcase would have a sixteen month timeline from design to possession.

TWO CHEFS – NO SPACE

TWO CHEFS – NO SPACE

Two Chefs – No Space

Creating More Kitchen Space with Interior Design and Interior Styling

The Challenge:

A relocation to an inner city neighborhood meant the sacrifice of the modern kitchen amenities, appliances and space. After living in a more spacious suburban home this couple was struggling to make their new inner city home reflect their lifestyle. This professional couple has a common passion for cooking. The current kitchen was dated from the 1970’s with honey oak cabinets and linoleum floors. Inefficient workings of the kitchen did not allow for storage or counter space. Existing cabinets were not prepared to accommodate the latest generation of appliances and the myriad of gadgets, spices and dishes to elegantly prepare their famous international cuisine. This is a new era of cooking and this kitchen needed to be brought into the 21st century.

The Design Solution:

A layout alteration began with the addition of patio doors to open out onto the beautiful backyard and to bring as much natural light into this small cave kitchen. An existing single entry door would later be repurposed for a unique pantry solution, with custom shelving, to accommodate it’s every need. The existing peninsula was removed and converted into a lower micro shelf and the cabinets were repositioned, still utilizing the existing frameworks to allow for the latest kitchen appliances including cooktop, double ovens and fridge.
Cabinets were capped with a paint grade bulkhead to run to the ceiling and the honey oak doors and frames received a dark walnut stain facelift. Additional lighting enhanced the dark corners and reconfiguration meant open shelving and display areas and the quantity of countertop space doubled! Additional lengths and a mobile prep island contributed to this success. A smaller table at the east end of the kitchen conceals a double sided bookshelf housing a stellar exotic cookbook collection.

“I was very satisfied with the design process and team. Organization is excellent, good communication since it’s important to stay informed.”
